Activations by Caitlin Hill & Justin Harrison
Caitlin and Justin adapt E.M Forster’s The Machine for the 21st Century, in response to the events of 2020, by leveraging existing video technologies to replicate some of the environments and sensations presented in the novel, giving an audience member a chance to both passively view and physically interact with an actor.
Catch a work-in-development activation as part of HWY Live on site at La Boite on the following days:
- Saturday 7 November, 6pm
- Saturday 14 November, 6pm
- Saturday 21 November, 6pm
Installations by RSM Arts Collective
Longer Tables, Not Higher Fences is a collaborative project between those currently or previously held in indefinite detention and local Meanjin/Brisbane artists. The work is a physical manifestation of the slogan Longer Tables Not Higher Fences, aiming to represent the possibility of sharing a meal with friends who are detained within our city, but unable to physically join with our community.
The artworks are spread over an 8-metre table, with crockery donated from homes around Meanjin. The table features artworks by people currently or previously in detention and local artists in communication with people inside detention, and the empty spaces on the table represent the men who have died while in mandatory detention - their voices are missing from the table.
Longer Tables, Not Higher Fences aims to provide a platform for the voices, stories and art of refugees who are trapped in immigration detention.
